Reaching Out to the Community: Real-Life Experience As a Bicycling Ambassador
Many are familiar with the successes of the Bicycling Ambassador programs of
Toronto and Chicago. These two programs use face-to-face outreach to encourage
bicycling while decreasing the number of bicycle-related injuries. This workshop
is an opportunity for the audience to play the role of an Ambassador and learn
hands-on how this community-building program works.

Presentation unavailable Increasing Participation in Cycling Through Skill Development
Fear of cycling in traffic is consistently cited as the main reason for choosing
not to cycle, especially to work. Without a program to address these fears,
participation campaigns have less impact in triggering change than they might.
This session will discuss Bike To Work Victoria's success in compressing basic
skill development into a one-day program that combines classroom theory with
on-road experience in live traffic. Delivered to more than 600 people since
1999, it has proven remarkably effective in raising the confidence andlikelihood
of continued cycling among its students. (49)
Presentation unavailable A Self-Regulated Code of Conduct for Cycling Groups
Voted the most livable city in the world, Melbourne, Australia, is often referred
to as a Mecca for cycling. Cycling is a popular activity; on any given weekend
day up to 8,000 cyclists of all calibers can be seen charging about in large
peletons. The large groups encouraged a domineering attitude that supported
the flagrant and intentional flouting of Road Rules. This presentation discusses
the co-operative development of the Shared Respect Initiative and the Self
Regulated Code of Conduct for Road Cycling intended to foster a more responsible
culture in group cycling. (57)

University & Bike Club Partnerships: Creating a Successful Bike
Helmets and Lights Campaign
The Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation and the University of Washington
established a low-cost bicycle helmet and lights sales campaign on campus in
2001, forming an innovative partnership to help bicyclists become safer and
more active riders. The lights/helmets campaign encourages safer bicycling,
but it is also a more comprehensive program to encourage bicycling for fitness
and transportation. Come learn strategies for forming partnerships and programs
with Universities and other large organizations, as well as creative financing
